Can Kitchen Cabinet Refacing Give Me a New Kitchen?

by Angelique Gervais
Refacing Cabinet Columnist

After receiving a $12,000.00 quote for replacing my existing kitchen cabinets with some that look more like the ones that I had been drooling over in home improvement magazines and internet sites, I reluctantly filed that dream into the "when I'm rich" category. After all, my existing cabinets are in great shape. They just don't have the light airy look that I crave. That is when the phrase kitchen cabinet refacing restored my dream to the "do-able on my budget" category.

Is it Really Cheaper?

Kitchen cabinet refacing is cost effective to say the least. If your existing kitchen cabinets are in good condition and in a workable configuration, what you will spend on kitchen cabinet refacing is a minor fraction of the cost of replacement.

What is Involved in Kitchen Cabinet Refacing?

When kitchen cabinets are replaced, you are looking at rather astronomical costs for several reasons. First of all is the cost of product. The most expensive part of new looking cabinets is rebuilding the structure itself. In other words, the bulk of the wooden cabinetry that is not even visible most of the time.

When kitchen cabinet refacing is done you save that cost because the existing cabinets structure is maintained. The complete replacement of kitchen cabinets is also much more costly because of the time involved. Even when you are having existing cabinetry replaced with pre-built cabinets, the amount of labor that goes into installation is still extensive.

You should also factor into this the fact that during this time your kitchen is completely unusable. The reality is that you can conceivably be without a kitchen for more than a month. Kitchen cabinet refacing can be done in relatively short time with a minimum of upset to your home and life.

With kitchen cabinet refacing, the veneer on the face of the cupboards is replaced with a new surface. Often cabinet tops are also replaced as is some hardware and possibly even cabinet doors. This means that through kitchen cabinet refacing you get the look of a new kitchen without most of the cost, mess, or inconvenience.
