Cost Effective Repairs for Your Custom Kitchen Cabinets

by Craig Friesen

Over the holidays your custom kitchen cabinets have been on the frontlines of all your meal preparations. Now that the dust has settled, you may find them looking a little worse for wear. Before you consider refinishing your kitchen cabinets or undertaking costly repairs, however, try some of these easy tricks.

Prevention is the Best Medicine

Though it may be too late to prevent any incidents that may have occurred over this holiday season, it is a good time to make new resolutions for protecting your cabinets.
  • Resolution #1: Never set hot pots, pans, or roasters down on your custom kitchen cabinet countertop. A burn or scorch mark can lead to a costly refinishing project on your kitchen cabinets. When preparing large meals, be sure you have several insulator pads set out, ready to handle those hot cooking pots.
  • Resolution #2: No matter how much of a hurry you are in, or how small the carving job may be, never cut directly on your custom kitchen cabinet countertop. This is a surefire way to wind up with unfortunate nicks or scratches. Most of us have all of the kitchen tools we need to protect our kitchen cabinets from damage--it's just a matter of using them.

Repairs for Your Custom Kitchen Cabinets that Won't Cost a Fortune

  • To repair burn areas in your kitchen cabinet tops, spread contact cement under the lifted laminate, smooth, and compress until dry.
  • Remove stains on the countertops with liquid dishwashing soap and a toothbrush.
  • Rejuvenate dull counters with car polish.
  • Reduce the severity of small cuts or scrapes in the countertops with clear lemon oil
  • If the chips or gouges are large, try a countertop repair kit which includes color-matching putty.
If the holidays have taken a toll on your cabinets and countertops, use these tips to fix up your accidents without the cost of refinishing your kitchen cabinets.
