Revamp Your Kitchen through Do It Yourself Cabinet Refacing

by Jane Smallman
Refacing Cabinet Columnist

The kitchen is one room in the house that gets constant and heavy use. As a result cabinets get chipped and stained and can start to look shabby. You can, however, give your kitchen a whole new look by carrying out some do-it-yourself cabinet refacing.

Do it yourself cabinet refacing is a quick, easy, and inexpensive way to revitalize your kitchen without making major changes.

If your kitchen cabinet doors are made from wood, you could try any of the following do it yourself cabinet refacing methods:

Do It Yourself Cabinet Refacing for a Kitchen Cabinet Faced With Wood

  • Cleaning. dirt and grease can build up over time and discolor your kitchen cabinet doors. A good cleaning will remove the grime and restore the natural color. Use a commercially prepared wood cleaner.

  • Bleaching. Use a commercial wood bleach to lighten the wood of your kitchen cabinet doors.

  • Staining. Use this to change the tone of your kitchen cabinet doors and finish with polyurethane.

  • Pickling. Do this by giving your kitchen cabinet doors a light coat of oil-based paint; wipe most of it off with a rag before it dries. This method gives a new, opaque look that brings out the natural grain of the wood.
If your kitchen cabinets are finished with a material other than wood, you could try the following refacing methods:

Do It Yourself Cabinet Refacing for Non-wood Finishes

  • Decorative Painting. Use techniques such as sponging, rag rolling, stippling or color washing. Alternatively try stenciling or painting the doors in panels of different colors.

  • Covering Up. Use materials like cork, patterned sheet metal, wood veneer or even wallpaper to change the look of your kitchen cabinet doors.

  • Glass. Replace the door panels with glass to give a completely different look.
