Glazing and Your Replacement Windows

by AJ Fanter

The right kind of replacement windows can save you money on your energy bills year round. But to ensure optimal efficiency of your home replacement windows, you need to choose the right kind of glazing.

Single-Glazed Replacement Windows

If your home features single-glazed clear glass windows, chances are you could benefit from replacement windows. Single-glazed windows are the least efficient, allowing heat to escape in the cooler months and build up in the summer. Adding tint to single-glazed windows will reduce glare, but they still won't have the efficiency of double-glazed home replacement windows.

Double-Glazed Replacement Windows

Double-glazed windows feature two "lites" of glass separated by air. According to the Efficient Windows Collaborative, installing double-glazed replacement windows can cut your heat loss in half.

Double-glazed home replacement windows are a better choice than tinted windows because they feature high, moderate, or low solar gain low-e glass. These replacement windows have an Argon or Krypton gas between the lites which helps to reduce the conductivity of hot and cold air. Double-glazed replacement windows also have low-e glass to reduce heat loss, but still let in some solar gain.

Depending on where in the country you live you'll choose between High Solar Gain (for climates which are colder), Moderate Solar (for mid-range climates) or Low-Solar Gain (for hot climates) low-e glass.

Triple-Glazed Replacement Windows

Want the most energy efficient windows? If your home is located in an extreme climate zone, choose Triple-Glazed windows. These replacement windows feature a very low heat loss. In addition to two low-e coatings and a gas fill, between the glazings, these windows have low-conductivity edge spacers and a middle glazing layer that is either glass or a plastic film.

Knowing the basics of window glazing will not only help you choose the right replacement windows for your home, but also save you money in the long run.
