Good Bathroom Design Helps to Guarantee a Relaxing Soak in the Tub

by Jane Smallman

An uncomfortable, impractical bathroom is no place to go for a relaxing soak in the tub. Instead of winding down, you simply find yourself getting wound up by all the imperfections you see around you. You can change this, however, by remodeling your bathroom on the basis of some good design principles.

Before you start remodeling your bathroom there are a few things you should do to make sure that the final design is exactly what you want. Before you start, do the following:

  • Think about why you want to remodel. Is it because the room needs a facelift? Do you want a bigger bath tub or different style? Is the room unsafe?
  • List your priorities. What comes first, the bigger bath tub or more room to move around? Be clear about what is most important.
  • What are you options? Can you steal a little space from another room to make your bathroom bigger and fit in that super-size tub, or must you simply fit your new design into the existing space?
  • Get inspired. Look for inspiration for your new bathroom by reading books and magazines or watching television programs with design ideas.
  • Resale value. Don’t forget that one day you might want to sell your home, so choose a bathroom design that’s not too over-the-top (unless you want to redecorate in a neutral color before you put the house on the market).
  • Measure up carefully. So that you know precisely what square footage you are working with.
  • Bathroom design. Make sure you get the best fit and layout for your fixtures and fittings in the space available. Choose a lavatory, sink, and bath tub that are a suitable size for the room, and spend time working on a layout that suits the room. The National Kitchen and Bath Association offers advice on placing bathroom fixtures.
