Green Flooring: Eco-Friendly Choices for Your Home

by AJ Fanter

Great looking floors don’t have to take a toll on the environment. And with prices for "green" flooring, such as bamboo, now more competitive with traditional flooring options, it's more attractive than ever before to go green.

Eco-friendly or "green" flooring has been around for many years, but these days there are more options than ever before. Some of today's top choices include bamboo flooring, cork flooring, and rubber flooring to name just a few.

Bamboo Flooring

Easy to install and relatively affordable, bamboo flooring is actually stronger and more stable than most hardwoods, but bamboo isn’t a wood, it a type of grass. Because bamboo grows as much as 12” a day, it’s an environmentally friendly and easily renewable source of flooring. Along with holding a beautiful grain, bamboo flooring is less likely to swell or shrink than wood surfaces.

Cork Flooring

A perfect choice for heavy traffic areas such as playrooms, offices, and kitchens, cork flooring comes from the bark of the Cork Oak Tree. Found in the Mediterranean, these trees aren’t harmed when the bark is removed for the manufacturing of the cork flooring. In fact, the removal of the bark can actually enhance their growth. Cork flooring is not only naturally fire and insect resistant and highly durable, it’s a great insulator and quite easy on the feet!

Recycled Rubber Flooring

Looking for a durable surface that’s easy to install, can take a huge amount of wear and tear, is stain-resistant, and is easy to repair in the event of serious damage? Then recycled rubber flooring could be for you. And the best part is rubber flooring is one of the most environmentally friendly flooring choices of all because it takes old tires and puts them to work in beautiful style. Recycled rubber flooring comes a variety of colors and can be used both indoors and out.

If you’re looking for flooring that not only looks good, but is good for the planet, with options like these it’s easier than ever to consider going green!
