Remodel for a French Country Kitchen

by H.L. Staples
Refacing Cabinet Columnist

Find the idea of visiting southern France inviting? Choose the French country style for your kitchen renovation and you’ll enjoy the sensual pleasures of southern France every time you enter your kitchen. A few basic remodelling design principles will give you the popular French country look.

Color: Evoke the sun-baked feel of southern France with color. Splash your walls with sunlight, using a classic butter yellow. Bring the sea’s shells indoors with textiles in oyster white. Let a bit of the French sky into your room with carefully selected blue accents. But when remodelling, go lightly with cool colors like blue, green, and greenish-yellows. Overall, the room should stir-up the feel of life in sunny Provence. For this, you need to go for it with the warm colors. Perhaps do a rub-through for the finish. This will let a bit of color peek out for the restoration look, creating some Old World charm.

Renovation Materials: As with your color choices, in your selection of materials, you want to bring to mind the natural beauty of southern France. For your renovation, choose rustic earthy materials like brick or tile for the floors. If you really want to go for it, make rough-hewn beams in plaster ceilings part of your renovation.

Kitchen Cabinets: A French country kitchen should have ample and attractive storage. Stow your kitchen contents out of sight in handsomely carved cabinets and dressers. As part of your remodel, select decorative doors that lend an armoire feel and cover built-in shelving. But avoid dark wood, which creates a heavy, formal feel to a room. Instead, select light woods for your kitchen.

A kitchen can be more than a place to whip up your grub. When you remodel, choose a style with a personality, like the French country kitchen, and you’ll have your place in the sun.
