What to Ask Before Hiring a Remodeling Contractor

by AJ Fanter

One of the hardest things about starting any remodeling project is finding a reputable and dependable contractor. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends that you interview each of the contractors that you are thinking about hiring before making a final decision.

Here are some questions to ask your remodeling contractor.

Questions To Ask Potential Contractors

  • How long have you been in business? Choose an experienced remodeling contractor and check their record with your local Better Business Bureau.
  • Are you licensed and registered with the state? Many states only license electricians and plumbers, but 36 states also require remodeling contractors to be registered. Check with your local building department to verify your contractor's license and registration.
  • How many remodeling projects have you completed in the last year and may I have a list? A list will show you exactly how "experienced" your contractor is.
  • Will I need a permit? Even small remodeling jobs can require a permit, and your contractor is usually the one who gets it. If your contractor wants you to get the permits, proceed with caution as this could be a sign he or she is not licensed.
  • Can I get a list of references? A reputable remodeling contractor will be able to provide you with names, addresses, and numbers of at least three clients. Find out when the jobs were finished and if you can see them.
  • Do you plan on using subcontractors? If your remodeling contractor plans on using a subcontractor, verify their licenses and insurance coverage. Also you should have all parties sign lien releases or waivers so that if your contractor fails to pay them, you're not liable for the bills.
  • What insurance do you carry? Your remodeling contractor should be able to demonstrate current worker's compensation, property damage, and personal liability coverage. Avoid any uninsured contractor as you could be liable in the event of damage or injury.

By asking these questions and getting everything in writing you should be well on your way to choosing a dependable and reputable remodeling contractor.
