Your kitchen cabinets are in rough shape and so is your budget. You've heard that it's easy to reface your own cabinets, but aren't sure if your carpentry skills are up to the job. But before we discuss skills, let's talk cabinets. If your cabinets are structurally unsound or you want to relocate them as part of a remodeling project, cabinet refacing won't work. On the other hand, you can do some basic cabinet refacing fairly quickly and get that fresh kitchen appearance you're looking for.

Cabinet Refacing 101

Here are some basic skills that can help you properly resurface your kitchen cabinets:

  • Measuring. You need to measure cabinet surfaces to be refaced to order the refacing materials. Measure at least three times. If your figures are different each time, it may be time to call in the pros.
  • Reading and following instructions: Your cabinet refacing material comes with instructions for cutting and installing it. Read the instructions before starting your project to ensure you fully understand the process. Any materials warranties may be contingent upon installation according to instructions.
  • Using hand tools: You'll be using hammers and screwdrivers, but not a rotary sander. Sorry folks, but you have to manually sand the surfaces of your cabinets with 150 grain sandpaper. This promotes a good bond between the cabinet and the refacing material.
  • Sawing and cutting: If you can use a circular saw and a box cutter, you should be able to cut panels and veneer.
  • Organizational ability: It's important to have all tools and supplies ready to go before you start your cabinet refacing project, and to keep things in their places when not in use. Otherwise, you waste a lot of time (and possibly vocabulary) looking for things.
  • Patience: You want to do a great job on your cabinets, so take your time and do it right. Rushing through the job can lead to a mediocre or worse result. You're investing money and skill by refacing your kitchen cabinets, so make sure you take the time necessary to do the job right.

You can save money and show off your new cabinets with pride when you've successfully completed your refacing project.
