Add Green Kitchen Cabinets to Your Kitchen Renovations

There are many different ways to make your kitchen more eco-friendly. Two ways to bring "green" into your kitchen include using materials that are sustainable and using materials that are recycled.

Green Kitchen Cabinets: Using Sustainable Materials

Most kitchen cabinets are made of wood. Unlike cherry, maple, or oak, bamboo is classified as a "sustainable" wood because it grows quickly. Bamboo has become popular for flooring and for cabinets throughout the home. It does have a distinctly modern look, so if you want a more traditional look for your green kitchen cabinets, perhaps recycling the existing cabinets is a better option.

Resurfacing Kitchen Cabinets in the Name of Recycling

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets using non-toxic, high-quality materials can create wonderful green kitchen cabinets. Look for water-based products that have low off-gassing (emitting chemical fumes into your environment). Cabinet refacing prices are very low and the project can usually be completed in a weekend for a moderately proficient do-it-yourselfer.

Your first step is to sand or strip the existing finish using an earth-friendly stripper. Then, repair any gouges or scratches. Prime the cabinets if you are painting them--consider a tinted primer if you are using a dark paint color.

How to Clean Kitchen Cabinets

Your green kitchen cabinets can last longer if you clean them thoroughly and regularly. Extending the life of your cabinets is also a way to go green. Clean bamboo easily with a damp cloth, or add a little dishwashing liquid to wipe away grease.

Heat can damage bamboo, so be mindful where you place your appliances so your cabinets are not getting toasted along with your breakfast.
