Five Questions to Ask Yourself Before Resurfacing Kitchen Cabinets
By Leslie A.M.RefacingCabinet.com Columnist
Here are 5 questions to ask yourself before you embark on resurfacing kitchen cabinets.
1. How much time do I have to give to resurfacing kitchen cabinets?
If you are pretty handy you can conceivably complete this project for an average-size kitchen in a weekend. If you hit a snag or all of this is brand new for you, it can take a week or longer. You also want warm, dry weather so the stain or paint dries completely between coats.
2. Do I know how to reface kitchen cabinets?
Resurfacing kitchen cabinets or "refacing" is not a difficult project. It is a matter of removing the old finish and putting on a new one. It's not as labor intensive or time consuming as removing wall paper but you should pay attention to details. For instance, keep track of which cabinet doors go where. The holes for the hinges might not be drilled the same for every door.
3. Do I have cabinet refacing supplies on hand?
Again, you don't need a lot to complete this project, but having what you need allows you to complete the project quicker.
- Sand paper--rough and fine grit
- Stripper and fine brush for detail work
- Paint, stain, and/or varnish
- Tack cloth
- Good quality brushes or other applicators
- Screwdriver to remove and replace hardware
4. What does cabinet refacing cost?
Add up the above supplies--you can complete this project for $200 or less.
5. Is it economical to hire cabinet refacers?
If you love lounging on the weekends, then professional cabinet refacers may be worth every dime to you! Get three bids and references before you sign the contract.
