Protecting Your Flooring from Summer Traffic

The beginning of summer vacation often brings contrasting reactions, depending upon who it is. Children yell with the exuberance of those who have no cares. For many parents though, summer means a lot of extra work.

With the kids participating in activities that keep them parading outside then back in throughout the day, keeping your flooring clean can be a huge hassle. Even though laminate, tile, and vinyl flooring have vastly different needs, here are some tips to help keep them all in good shape this summer.

What are the Water Concerns?

Water is a big part of summer fun. The type of flooring you have will determine the level of concern you need to have over the effects of that water on it. Hardwood flooring is easily damaged by water. If you have hardwood, you will want to divert traffic whenever possible. Vinyl, laminate, and tile floors are all very resistant to water damage. However, some vinyl and laminate flooring and most tile flooring can be very slick when damp. It is a very good idea to strongly encourage removal of footwear at the door. Keep a towel handy to dry off bare feet in order to prevent falls.

How Will Dirt Affect Laminate, Tile, and Vinyl Floors Over Time?

Dirt by itself does relatively little damage to your vinyl or laminate flooring and none at all to tile. However, when scuffed around by feet and ground into the surface it results in minute scratches which make the floor appear dull. The best policy to minimize dirt is the same as for water - remove shoes at the door. Also, carpet runners can serve you well for the summer. Lay them across high traffic areas and put them away when the summer rush passes.

With a little planning, you and your flooring can make it through the summer unscathed.
