Remodeling kitchen cabinets takes a plan. Here are some things to consider before you even start shopping for new kitchen cabinets.

1. Do I want to change my kitchen cabinet layout?

If you're not moving your kitchen cabinets, you only need replace kitchen cabinet doors or resurface existing kitchen cabinets.

2. Can I remove a wall to make my kitchen renovations more worthwhile?

This can open up possibilities you may not have considered. If the wall has cabinets and a kitchen counter running along it, turn that into an island or peninsula to retain valuable storage space.

3. How much storage do I need?

You can eliminate the need for a few cabinets in the kitchen if you have a china hutch or buffet table in your dining room. You can also add a row of cabinets in your dining room for storage.

4. Drawers or cabinets?

Drawers can be just as functional as cabinets, but they're often more expensive.

5. Can I reuse my custom cabinet doors?

Even if you build your own kitchen cabinets, you may be able to salvage your custom cabinet doors.

6. What size cabinets do I need?

Look at the items you need to store, and shop accordingly. You have lots of options for storing vertically with pull out shelving units and more.

7. Do I have enough workspace?

Create enough kitchen counter space for all your activites.

8. Do I have enough lighting?

If you created new workstations, make sure you install the necessary lighting.

9. Can I build a walk-in pantry?

You may find space by moving your water heater outside or re-engineering a broom closet.

10. When can I start remodeling kitchen cabinets?

Start sketching!
