Comparing Kitchen Cabinet Materials
Kitchen cabinets come in many different varieties, from wood and vinyl to plastics, laminate and veneer. When choosing which type is best for you, cost is only one of many factors to consider.
Wood Kitchen Cabinets
In years past wooden kitchen cabinets were the only real option, and they are still the most common type. However, the price of wood has increased significantly since then. Wood used to be abundant and not prized as it is today.
Wooden kitchen cabinets are beautiful, strong, durable, and versatile, which means the cost is generally higher than for other materials. However, wooden cabinets can be refinished, painted, and easily changed to suit changing needs. If you can afford wood, it is still the best option for kitchen cabinets.
Wood Veneer Kitchen Cabinets
Wood veneer is an excellent alternative that allows you to save a little on the initial costs. The finishes are very convincing and the construction is warp-resistant. In time, however, wood veneer can peel, and if it's painted, you won't be able to sand down to the base to start over. However, when considering overall durability and layout, wood veneer is an excellent material for kitchen cabinets.
Laminate and Thermo Plastic Kitchen Cabinets
Thermo plastic and laminate kitchen cabinets are very affordable alternatives for kitchen cabinet doors. The downside of thermo plastic is that the finish will discolor with time. Neither thermo nor laminate stand up well to scratches and cuts. Also, your options for changing the appearance are virtually nonexistent. However, if you're looking for low-cost kitchen cabinets that look good here and now, laminate or thermo plastic could be for you.
There are more options in kitchen cabinetry than ever before. But whichever you choose, you can count on one thing: your new kitchen will shine for many years to come.
