Staining Kitchen Cabinets Normally: Materials and Know-how
Staining is a basic project that even the greenest do-it-yourselfer can get right. According to the Online Tips blog, staining kitchen cabinets can be done using a simple four-step process:
- Sand the Original Finish. Electric sanders are okay, but they can wear into the wood; sanding by hand is recommended--particularly for valuable or sentimental cabinetry
- Apply the First Coat. To ensure an even application, use a lint-free cloth to apply the stain; use rubber gloves and work in proper ventilation
- Apply the Second Coat. After the first coat, let the cabinets sit half an hour before applying the second; touch up lighter areas with more stain
- Varnish, as Necessary. For a glossy coat and easier maintenance, use a quality cabinet varnish; go polyurethane for oak cabinets
Staining Oak Cabinets: The Slight Deviation
The Do It Yourself home renovation blog brings up an interesting point to keep in mind when staining oak cabinets. The natural oak stain is a golden yellow color. That said, it's important to use a lighter color stain to keep with the original shade. A dark over a light is not recommended simply because the bottom coat will fade the top coat after sitting for some time. In your home and garden center, look for stains that specify an oak finish.
