3 Good Reasons to have an Open Kitchen Floor Plan

Whether you install double doors, slide-away panels, or knock down an entire wall, an open plan kitchen and dining room remodel can transform your cooking and eating areas from functional to fabulous. Not convinced? Below are three benefits that just might persuade you.

1. There Can Never Be Too Much Chopping Block: By opening up the space, you introduce the possibility of further cabinetry. Many people who choose to create an open plan also put in a kitchen island. You have many island options--everything from a sit-down breakfast bar to simple stainless steel shelving.

2. Let There Be Light:  If you choose a renovation with an open plan, you'll make the most use of your windows. If you have a bay window in the dining room, for example, after you remodel it will also be in the kitchen.  If the kitchen and dining room windows are on different sides of the house, you'll get ambient light at different times of the day after your renovation.

3. A Renovation for a More Relaxed Family Feel: An open plan space allows for more activities to take place at once and allows the family to be together more often. For example, while your child sits at the table and completes homework, you can whip up dinner. The informality of the space creates a calmer feeling, which encourages hanging out.

One Reason Not to Remodel for an Open Plan

If you're drawn to the open plan just because you think you'll get a chance to go at a wall with a sledgehammer, you may want to reconsider. Breaking down a wall or installing doors requires a good deal of skill to be done properly. You'll want to hire a contractor for this home renovation.
